Don't quote me on this cause I've neither seen the movie nor read the book; but just going by the voice over while she's being banged on the seat, I'd assume that her boyfriend got killed in action and she's remembering his last letter to her. Sudden grief can make you do things you never would have even thought of doing otherwise. Just my opinion on the scene.
